Black Lightning is taking a short hiatus next week. But when it returns, the Book of Consequences gives way to the Book of Blood as a new phase in the series begins. And as this preview of the next episode suggests, Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) will be honest about what he’s lost while Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III) continues to reestablish himself in as a public figure in Freeland.
So let’s recap just what Black Lightning’s return has cost Jefferson so far. He lost his role as principal at Garfield High. In fact, he may have lost the soul of the school as zero tolerance policies and metal detectors turn the place into a detention block. He’s lost his chance to get Tobias for the murder of his father thanks to Gambi’s (James Remar) diligence in removing every trace of Jeff from the crime scene. His friendship with Henderson (Damon Gupton) is on the skids while his relationships with Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) continue to fray.
And in enumerating all of the losses, the Book of Consequences was a pretty depressing storyline. Maybe spelling out all of these difficulties were key to the program’s second year. It sets out a list of objectives as Jeff tries to get the school back and finally get Tobias. At the same time, “the Book of Blood” is an ominous title for the next story, leaving one to wonder how much more Black Lightning will have to pay to set things right.
