An Alien Invasion And An Uncaring Hero In Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt #1 From Gillen & Wijngaard

by Olly MacNamee

Out January 2019 from Dynamite is Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt #1, Kieron Gillen’s return to superhero comics, along with artists Caspar Wijngaard with a regular cover by Sean Phillips. And, the preview below seems to be introducing a whole new set of superpowers individuals into Peter’s universe, which he once shared with the Charlton Heroes that DC bought and turned in the Watchmen.
We catch up with Pete as all Hell is breaking loose and a whole city is laid to waste by an alien invasion, with a seemingly careless Peter Cannon. Shades of Watchmen, or what? But, I imagine that’s intentional, don’t you? It all makes for a very interesting set-up that I can’t wait to explore.

His level of genius is matched only by his heroics, and in humanity’s darkest hour, he’s the hero they need the most-alas, poor humanity. Peter Cannon-the man known as Thunderbolt-is only too happy to leave civilization to face its end. Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + the Divine) teams up with powerhouse artist Caspar Wijngaard (Doctor Aphra, Limbo) as he returns to the superhero genre with a dark, humorous and relentless love song to the genre. Well, “Love Song” in a Leonard Cohen Love Song kind of way. Peter Cannon, Thunderbolt: saving a world he hates.
