Lionsgate has unleashed the first trailer for their reboot of Hellboy. The film stars Stranger Things‘s David Harbour as the titular Hellboy, a demon of sorts destined to lead the charge during the end of days — not that he really wants anything to with that, of course. And based on this trailer for the upcoming film, it seems he wants nothing to do with his adoptive father Trevor Bruttenholm (Ian McShane) or the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense. But if one thing remains true to the character from Mike Mignola’s comic book series, it is that the Right Hand of Doom is still good for smashing things. Oh, and Hellboy still gets thrown around a lot.
But after all the hoopla producers made about recreating Hellboy with a darker tone, the trailer suggests a film very much like the Hellboy
cycle initiated by Guillermo del Toro. Which is not necessarily a bad thing as that is the natural tone of the comic book. Hellboy should be funnier than people expect; just like how the character’s appearance suggests a more gruff and serious character.
Hopefully, the film will maintain the tone and give Hellboy plenty of time to yell “crap!” while being flung off a monster or dropped from a great height. And, hopefully, it tells a version of some later Hellboy comic book stories in a fitting way.
Hellboy arrives in theaters on April 12th.
