One of the biggest games announced during The Game Awards last year was NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat 11. The trailer ended with the promise of a bigger reveal in January, and the developer spent a good portion of January 17th on their reveal event. The event featured the first gameplay reveal, shown above, but also live gameplay, interviews with the developer, and more.
From the looks of things, we’re looking at a potential 25 member base roster, with eleven characters confirmed so far: Scorpion, Raiden, Sonya Blade, Sub Zero, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Kabal, Baraka, Skarlet, and new characters Kronika and Geras. That’s not counting pre-order character Shao Khan, bringing the current total up to twenty-six characters, which sounds about right for a base roster from NetherRealm. They’re known for extensive DLC, so expect no fewer than six to eight (possibly even twelve) extra characters announced later on in “Kombat Packs”.
The developers also had a proper character trailer for their new character Geras, a bruiser with the ability to control the “sands of time”. There’s no confirmation yet, but given all the references to “classic” characters and the story we glimpse above, we’re assuming the storyline will feature Raiden having to answer for how horribly he’s altered the timeline. Especially since altering it hasn’t seemed to accomplish much of anything positive.
Lastly, the Twitch reveal also showed off an impressive amount of customization. Everything from uniquely controlling how AI plays to the costumes, entrances, fatalities, and the gear your character wears will all be customizable. As always, NetherRealms’ has an intense focus on progression and single-player content.
Mortal Kombat XI releases April 23rd on Xbox One, Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
