The Final Battle With Nebula In Asgardians Of The Galaxy #5
by Josh Davison
[*Mild Spoilers Ahead!]
Kid Loki is at the mercy of Nebula and her army of undead gods. Worse yet, Thor is under the control of one of the undead gods. The Asgardians of the Galaxy are still trying to escape the Nova Corps. Loki tries to keep Nebula at bay with a series of illusions, but it doesn’t hold her for long. However, it keeps her busy just long enough for the Asgardians to truly arrive and the final battle between they and Nebula to begin.
Asgardians of the Galaxy #5 brings the series’ first arc to a close, as the Asgardians come to a showdown with Nebula.
The opening pages consist of Kid Loki and Nebula exchanging banter. Nebula is suspicious that this is actually any true aspect of Loki, and, of course, Loki is just trying to keep her talking long enough to survive.
The true fight between the Asgardians and Nebula is disappointingly short. Angela frees Thor, Thor blasts apart the ship, and Loki comes up with another illusion that stops Nebula cold. It’s a bit underwhelming, and most of the Asgardians don’t really have anything significant to do during the fight.
We do also figure out how Loki was able to initially rope Angela into this business, and it goes into a bit of Angela lore that some will likely have forgotten.
Matteo Lolli’s artwork is once again quite good, granting this cosmic odyssey some visual personality and energy. The interior of Nebula’s ship is a little dull; it could have used some more details to give it a distinct identity and make it less throwaway. Beyond that, the book does look good, and Stephanie Hans’ flashback sequence near the end looks fantastic. The color work of Federico Blee is solid, and Hans colors her own segment with an ethereal and otherworldly palette that serves the book well.
Asgardians of the Galaxy #5 isn’t quite what most likely hoped it would be, but it is a decent read with many fun parts to it. I wouldn’t call it a must-buy from this week, but it’s worth checking out if you like these characters.
Asgardians of the Galaxy #5 comes to us from writer Cullen Bunn, artists Matteo Lolli with Luca Maresca and Stephanie Hans, color artists Federico Blee and Stephanie Hans, letterer VC’s Cory Petit, and cover artist Dale Keown with Jason Keith.
