Ant-Man’s David Dastmalchian Joins Dune As Piter De Vries

David Dastmalchian is about to set his mind in motion.
Deadline reports the Ant-Man film series veteran will appear in Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune as Mentat Piter De Vries. Based on the novel by Frank Hebert, the film details political maneuverings in the far-flung future when all of humanity is desperate for a vital energy source and conscience-expanding drug found on only one planet in the known universe: planet Arrakis, also known as Dune. In the year 10,191 (which is more like 20,000 years from now thanks to a rejiggering of the standard calendar), House Atreides is ordered by the Padisah Emperor Shaddam IV to mine the spice on behalf of the Empire. But the whole thing is a trap set by the Emperor and House Harkonnen, chief rivals of the Atreides.
Dastmalchian’s Piter is a Mentat — a living computer as thinking machines are outlawed in the time of Dune — in the service of the Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard) and, at the very least, co-author of the plot against House Atreides. He also has a fascination with Duke Leto Atreides’ (Oscar Issac) Royal Consort, the Bene Gesserit Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson). According to his training in the Mentat ways of logic, this fascination is bad. But his decisions in regards to House Atreides represent just one factor in a wide-reaching set of schemes which will forever alter the course of human evolution.
The film stars Timothee Chalamet as Paul Atreides, the son of Leto and Jessica; Javier Bardem as the Fremen leader Stilgar; Dave Bautista as Baron Harkonnen’s cruel nephew Rabban; Josh Brolin Gurney Halleck, one of Paul’s teachers; Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, another of Paul’s teachers; Charlotte Rampling as the Reverend Mother Helen Gaius Mohiam, head of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood; and Zendaya as Chani, a Fremen warrior who become quite close to Paul.
Dune is scheduled for release on November 20th, 2020.
