Gina Prince-Bythewood’s adaptation of The Old Guard now has a home at Netflix.
Deadline reports the streaming service has secured the rights to the film, based on the comic book series by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández. Charlize Theron and KiKi Layne star as members of an immortal mercenary group who must rally together when their secrets are exposed and a new rival group of immortals surfaces. Rucka is adapting the book for Prince-Bythewood, who is slated to direct.
The film continues both Prince-Bythewood and Theron’s association with comic book properties. The actor stared in Atomic Blonde, based on the Oni graphic novel The Coldest City, while the director helmed the pilot of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger. She also serves as an executive producer on the series.
Netflix, meanwhile, continues its association with comics after the dissolution of its partnership with Marvel Entertainment. Other comic book based projects include its Millarworld slate of TV shows and movies. One of these projects, Jupiter’s Legacy, recently announced its cast.
The Old Guard is not yet scheduled for release.
