Hulu Renews Runaways For A Third Season

by Erik Amaya

Sunday came with a good word for Marvel’s Runaways. After star James Marsters leaked a Season 3 renewal at the Lexington Comic & Toy Con, Hulu confirmed the series would return for another 10-episode season.
“We are so excited to tell more Runaways stories and are so grateful to Marvel, Hulu, our amazing cast and crew and of course our passionate audience,” said co-showrunners and executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage in a joint statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Season three will be a magical time on Runaways, as we deepen our connection to the Marvel universe. We are honored to continue to play in the sandbox created by Brian K. Vaughn and Adrian Alphona.”
Eagle-eyed readers will note Schwartz and Savage made mention of deepening the show’s connection with the Marvel Universe. In the first two seasons, those connection were downplayed as some of the characters’ origins derive from Marvel Merry Mutants — an IP the Disney-owned television show could not use as the X-Men characters were in use at 20th Century Fox. But with Disney’s recent acquisition of Fox’s assets, the X-Men are home and Runaways now has access to most of the Marvel brands. But it still remains to be seen if the series is truly connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe or part of an off-shoot world like the other Marvel series produced by ABC Studios; which are only partially connected.
It is currently unclear when production will start or when Runways third season will debut.
