Dark Phoenix Reshoots Inspired By Another Superhero Movie’s Conclusion
by Erik Amaya
Now that Dark Phoenix is set for release next week, the press tour begins. And when a movie loses its release date twice and goes back in for reshoots, the cast of the film must field questions about those delays during the press tour. While speaking with Yahoo!, actor James McAvoy, came up with a pretty creative answer to why Dark Phoenix shot new material: he blamed another superhero flick.
“The end changed a hell of a lot,” he told the site. “The finale had to change. There was a lot of overlap and parallels with another superhero movie that came out … a while ago.”
Considering Dark Phoenix was meant for release last year, that would suggest the ending was similar to anything from Thor: Ragnarok to Avengers: Infinity War. Comicbook.com suspects Captain Marvel and its use of Skrulls put the film in an unfortunate position, which is possible. At the same time, since these films are developed in something of a vacuum, it had to be a film released after Dark Phoenix finished its initial production, but prior to the moment it fell away from its original November 8th, 2018 release date.
So … let’s just say Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) originally used the Phoenix Force to turn everyone to dust.
Presumably, the new ending will offer something more optimistic even as this version of the X-Men head into the sunset. The next time we see them after Dark Phoenix, they will be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and quite different.
Dark Phoenix opens on June 7th.
