In various territories across the globe, Warner Bros. Entertainment has released the first trailer for the upcoming film The Kitchen. Based on the DC Vertigo series by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle, the story centers on group of mob wives — Kathy, Ruby and Claire — who decide to keep running the rackets in Hell’s Kitchen when their husbands all land in the clink simultaneously. According to early reports, the film is a “gritty drama” maintaining the comic book’s 1970s setting. Straight Outta Compton screenwriter Andrea Berloff adapted the comic book and make her directorial debut with the feature. And if this trailer is any indication, it appears she maintained a lot of the grit endemic to New York in the 70s. But take a look at the trailer below and judge for yourself.
The film stars Tiffany Haddish as Ruby, a woman willing to kill anyone in the way of her plan and Melissa McCarthy as Kathy, the woman who decides the three should keep the family business going. And as seen in the trailer, Elisabeth Moss plays Claire, an abused wife who comes to enjoy the violent aspects of the business. Common, Domhnall Gleeson and national treasure Margot Martindale also star.
The Kitchen opens on August 9th.
