The Fight To Save The Eververse In Black Science #40

by Josh Davison

[*Mild Spoilers Ahead!]

Kadir and Chandra have been cast out into the ruined city by Grant, but the two exiles are still intent on bringing down Doxta. Meanwhile, Grant, Sara, Pia, Ward, Shaman, Nate, Shawn, and Krolar are already heading straight towards Doxta to take her head on and save all of reality. Upon arriving, they find Kor in a dungeon, and Pia brings him on for the mission. Grant begins to hallucinate when they make it to Doxta, as she is able to manipulate their perception of reality. Despite this, Grant, Sara, Pia, and the rest just may be able to turn the tide.

Black Science #40 brings the series closer to its final climax and conclusion. Grant, Sara, and their allies make one last heroic charge to save everything from the witch, Doxta, but whether it’s enough remains to be seen.

Grant’s inability to grapple with his own past and failures remains a large theme, even as we close in on the finale. When Doxta begins messing with Grant’s mind, his painful childhood and myriad mistakes surround him.

Of course, even Grant’s allies can’t hide their doubts and fears about him. Even Pia drops a reference to how much of a screw-up her father is.

Worse yet, it’s very possible this desperate charge against Doxta will be Grant’s greatest mistake yet. Even Sara’s ability to save Grant from himself may not be enough this time.

The superhero vibes of this issue are quite a bit of fun though.

Matteo Scalera’s artwork remains unique and compelling, especially as we close in on the big finish. The texturing remains impeccable, and the almost caricature-depiction of the characters has always given Black Science a unique visual identity. Meanwhile, Moreno Dinisio’s color art sets the perfect tone of danger and wonder.

Black Science #40 is a high-energy and high-tension issue, bringing Grant, Sara, and all of their allies into a final showdown with Doxta while being left to wonder if Grant is truly the person to lead them. The writing and art are of as high quality as ever this issue, and the comic earns a recommendation. Check it out.

Black Science #40 comes to us from writer Rick Remender, artist Matteo Scalera, color artist Moreno Dinisio, letterer Rus Wooton, cover artist Matteo Scalera with Moreno Dinisio, and variant cover artist Lewis LaRosa.
