Jaume Collet-Serra Reportedly In Talks To Helm Black Adam

by Erik Amaya

After years and years of talk, Black Adam may finally be closer to become a reality.
Variety reports director Jaume Collet-Serra is talks to direct the Dwayne Johnson starring flick. Collet-Serra may be familiar from movies like The Shallows, The Commuter, and Unknown. He is also currently in post production on Johnson’s upcoming Jungle Cruise film. Black Adam, meanwhile, is the infamous adversary of Shazam who first appeared in The Marvel Family #1. While he only appeared the once during the Fawcett Comics Captain Marvel era, DC Comics writers like Jerry Ordway and Geoff Johns amplified his role, gave him a more detailed back story, and made him a favorite anti-hero with occasional slides into villainy.
Johnson has long been attached to play the character. Initially, he considered playing Shazam until enough of his fans told him he was better suited for Black Adam. Johnson negotiated to play the character in his own movie back before plans for a DC cinematic universe even began to take shape. This is part of the reason Black Adam sat out Shazam!, though the character makes a cameo of sorts toward the film’s opening when the Wizard Shazam (Djimon Honsou) tell a young Thaddeus Sivana about his previous champion. Presumably, the two characters will eventually square off in a crossover film.
Black Adam is still not scheduled for release, but expect a date to firm up once Collet-Serra closes his deal.
