The Runaways/Cloak & Dagger Crossover Is On

by Erik Amaya

When we spoke to Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb at WonderCon in March, he hinted a greater cohesion between Runaways and Cloak & Dagger was possible. And now, it is a certainty.

Deadline reports Runaways‘ third season will crossover with the Freeform series. More specific details are, of course, hidden in the Marvel veil of secrecy, but the video above announcing the event makes it pretty clear Tyrone (Aubrey Jospeh) and Tandy (Olivia Holt) will be visiting Los Angeles and meeting the team as part of their own runaway trip from New Orleans.

“It’s so fun being able to do something that revels in the Mighty Marvel Manner!” Loeb told the site. “Having these young heroes crossover allows fans of both shows to see the adventure everyone has been waiting for.”

From almost the moment Cloak & Dagger was announced, the notion they could meet up with the Runaways gained traction in fan circles. It is a natural fit. Cloak & Dagger has never been shy about its Marvel connections with references to certain New York cops. Runaways played its connections closer to the vest, leaving some wondering if it took place in Marvel TV’s corner of the MCU or another reality altogether. But the crossover confirms Runaways is a proper Marvel show and illustrates Marvel TV’s growing importance on Hulu. In the coming years, the company will also produce live action series based on Ghost Rider and other Marvel character for the service. Presumably, all tied to the Marvel TV continuity which began on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Hopefully, someday, the former Defenders can join them.

Runaways 10-episode third season will see the group searching for Chase (Gregg Sulkin), Gert (Ariela Barer), and Karolina (Virginia Gardner) — who were captured last season — while contending with an unstoppable enemy who has targeted Leslie (Annie Wersching) and the child she’s carrying. The story will eventually take them into a “dark realm” ruled by Morgan La Fey (Elizabeth Hurley).

Runaways returns December 13th.
