Chris Miller Says Spider-Verse TV Series Will Be “Unique” And “Related”

You may recall Sony still has control of the Spider-Man library as part of series of deals Marvel made with various film production entities across the late 1980s and into the ’90s — a story worthy of its own book. But much like Fox before it was sold to Disney, Sony has the rights to characters like Spider-Man, Electro, Green Goblin, Gwen Stacy, and more as long as they continue to put projects into active development and make features on a regular basis.
As part of maintaining their control, Sony is moving into the television realm with the Spider-Verse and called upon Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse executive producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord to develop a number of TV projects as part of their deal with Sony Pictures Television.
While speaking with Deadline at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Miller gave a few details about the overall project. Each live action series will be a “unique experience,” but “related” in some way. This handful of shows will take their inspiration from the “900 characters” Sony controls thanks to the arcane way it ended up with Spider-Man at the end of the 20th Century.
“We’ve been talking to a lot of potential teammates for trying to do something not like anything else that’s been done on television,” he added. “It’ll be a little while before it all comes together and is on the air, but I think it is going to be something really special.”
Make your guesses as to which characters may emerge with their own shows. Currently, Sony is readying Morbius the Living Vampire for its own feature debut and a sequel to last years surprise success Venom with Andy Serkis set to direct. It was also developing a feature for Black Cat and Silver Sable which then split into two separate projects for the characters. It is unclear if either of those projects are still in active development, but both character could make for an interesting series.
