Black Stars Above will be one the new titles launched by Vault Comics under their Nightfall horror imprint which we’d previously written about. One part The Revenant and one part HP Lovecraft, it comes from the creative team of writer Lonnie Nadler (The Dregs, Marvelous X-Men), debut artist Jenna Cha, with colorist Brad Simpson (Coffin Bound, Fair Lady), and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (Test, Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt). Issue #1 will hit shops on November 6th, 2019, but we have first look at some of the interior pages that certainly sets the right tone for such a spooky Lovecraftian book. And, like all new vault Comics, this one comes with a Vault Vintage homage cover, by Nathan Gooden and Tim Daniel, that pays tribute to Frank Miller’s iconic cover to Whiteout, by Greg Rucka and Steve Lieber (Oni Press, 1999)
The year is 1887 and a storm brews. A young fur trapper flees her overbearing family only to get lost in a dreamlike winter wilderness that harbours a cosmic threat. The fur trade is dead and the nation is changing. Yet, Eulalie Dubois has spent her entire life tending to her family’s trapline, isolated from the world. A chance at freedom comes in the form of a parcel that needs delivering to a nameless town north of the wilderness. Little does Eulalie know, something sinister hides in those woods and it yearns for what she has.
