Koei-Tecmo Announces A Fairy Tail RPG
by Sage Ashford
Developer GUST and publisher Koei-Tecmo have announced a new RPG based on the popular manga and anime series Fairy Tail. From the game’s YouTube description:
Demons, dark wizards, dragons, and cats – players will find it all as they start your journey in the land of Fiore. In FAIRY TAIL, wizards play through the adventures of Natsu Dragneel and Lucy Heartfilia, as well as other eccentric members of the FAIRY TAIL mage guild, on a fun-filled and thrilling quest. GUST Studios is creating the game under the supervision of author Hiro Mashima, promising a faithful recreation for the FAIRY TAIL world and its unusual inhabitants; including everything from magic to its iconic characters.
Fairy Tail’s RPG will be at Tokyo Game Show, so while this isn’t very much information, we’ll know more by the end of next week. In any case, it’s exciting to finally have anime licensed games not fall under the arena fighter genre. But just because it’s capable of more story depth than a fighter doesn’t mean this will be a quality game. There are a lot of questions which need to be answered about this title.
Are we looking at a turn-based title or an action game? How many of the Fairy Tail guild members will tag along? The trailer shows Natsu, Lucy, Erza, Gray, and Wendy. What about some of its many side characters, arguably some of the better people in the cast? Lastly, what are we looking at in terms of the storyline? Is this going to be a recreation of Fairy Tail’s storyline, or are we looking at an original story? Looking at the description, it’s entirely possible this will be an original story created for the game. That wouldn’t be terribly surprising, considering Hiro Mashima loves to fold in Fairy Tail stories from outside his own creations into the main title–the Key of the Starry Sky filler arc seems to have become canon, for instance.
And even if it is it’s own game, how much work are they going to put into it? Will we be able to go on side quests for the guild as the show often sends Fairy Tail on? A game where players could work their way up from C to S Rank while completing the story, perhaps. Supposedly, this game has been in the works for the better part of three years, after winning a poll of Koei-Tecmo’s about what anime series they could turn into a game. Hopefully, the development time they were able to get will be enough to give the show everything they need.
The Fairy Tail RPG will release next year on PC, PlayStation 4, and the Nintendo Switch.
