Black Lightning Is On The Brink Of War In Season 3 Teaser
by Erik Amaya
The CW has released a new teaser for the third season of Black Lightning and it seems the situation in Freeland is worse than ever. But the strife in town has crossed the country with war seemingly inevitable. And if you look closely at the trailer, armed militias and children in cages are part of the effort to postpone (or encourage?) an open conflict.
Presumably, the war will be against Markovia, the Eastern European nation at the heart of so much of Black Lightning‘s misery. The initial ASA metahuman project was established to create super soldiers for the eventual conflict against Markovia and even Tobias (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III) tried to sell his remaining pod stock to the Markoivans who were themselves trying to kidnap key people from the operation.
Long ago, showrunner Salim Akil said he had a three-year story in mind for the series, taking the superhero metaphor for inner city drug use from the streets to the real source of the blight. Is Markovia a rather pointed stand-in for a real world nation? And is the show saying an open conflict is the only solution left?
But considering Black Lightning’s deep ties with the country in the pages of DC Comics, it is possible Jefferson (Cress Williams) may be able to talk the Markovians down. Well, provided their royal family in sympathetic to a peaceful solution. And provided Jeff can escape whatever trap has been set for him.
Black Lightning returns October 7th on The CW.
