Last Resorts And Lost Control With Invaders #9
by Josh Davison
[*Mild Spoilers Ahead!]
Namor tires of Machan’s scheming and the lost memories he’s caused. Despite that, Namor still moves forward on the assault on the Roxxon drilling station. The attack quickly turns into a bloodbath. Thankfully, the Invaders have called upon some old friends, Captain America, Iron Torch, Toro, and Spitfire arrive to put a stop to Namor’s attack. They slow Namor’s forces down, but the Sub-Mariner still escapes. The visions of Machan are becoming more intense, and the Serpent Crown seems to be working without Namor’s control.
Invaders #9 finds the team and Atlantis going into the final stages of their plans. The Invaders know that Namor must be stopped at all costs, and Namor and Machan are ready to unleash their vengeance upon the surface world.
Well, Machan is ready. Namor is trying to mitigate the bloodshed. Unfortunately, he’s no longer in full control of his actions.
Despite the ample action of the comic, little of larger and immediate consequence happens until the final few pages. Until then, it’s mostly the introduction of Spitfire and the battle on the Roxxon oil rig.
That’s still exciting though, so yours truly has no complaints in that regard.
Carlos Magno and Butch Guice continue to tagteam this comic, and both artists continue to blow it out of the water. The action sequences in this book (there are many) look phenomenal, and Namor’s continued descent into madness is rendered excellently in each artist’s work with the eyes. There is a strange inconsistency in Namor’s facial hair across the two artists–Guice gives Namor a beard while Magno doesn’t. Other than that gaffe, the art is top notch. Alex Guimarães’ color art impresses as well, and it injects additional life and excitement into this explosive comic.
Invaders #9 is another intense and endlessly compelling comic from this series. Namor is completely losing control, and the Invaders are running out of options in regards to bringing a peaceful end to this conflict. It’s a hell of a ride. Needless to say, this comic gets a recommendation. Give it a read.
Invaders #9 comes to us from writer Chip Zdarsky, artists Carlos Magno and Butch Guice, color artist Alex Guimarães, letterer VC’s Travis Lanham, and cover artist Butch Guice with Romulo Fajardo Jr.
Final Score: 9/10
