Star Wars: Age Of Resistance – Rey Faces Her Destiny

by Tony Thornley

Rey has had one of the most fascinating journeys in the Star Wars canon, transforming from a nobody to perhaps the most important young hero since Luke Skywalker. In Star Wars: Age of Resistance- Rey, we get a glimpse into the young woman in the process of fulfilling her destiny.

Tom Taylor, Ramon Rosanas, Guru-eFx, and Travis Lanham dive in between the scenes to give us more insight into our heroine.

In the wake of The Force Awakens, Rey is stuggling terribly. However kind words from General Leia are enough to motivate her into her mission to find Luke Skywalker. Any further doubt she has is overcome when she finds herself face to face with a new foe while en route to Ahch-To…

Taylor has a fantastic knack for character work, which is why the front half of the story is so strong. We get to see the bond between Leia and Chewie get renewed, while forging the bond between Rey and Leia. It’s a scene that adds so much to what fans only got hints at on screen. However, the last half of the story is fairly weak in comparison, seemingly only there to give the issue a bit of action and not much else.

Rosanas line work is able to convey the emotional beats of the story perfectly. Though he doesn’t do anything groundbreaking, it’s clear he made that choice to keep the focus on the emotional beats and character interactions. He captures the pain and insecurities our heroes are struggling through. His depiction of Leia in particular is kind and regal, showing the legendary hero as she’s meant to be, and how Carrie Fisher intended her to be seen.

These journeys are coming to an end, and they’ve done so much for fleshing out the heroes of the Resistance, just in time for their final film.

Star Wars: Age of Resistance – Rey is available now from Marvel Comics.
