Top Picks For Halloween ComicFest 2019

by Olly MacNamee

With October staring down upon us, it’s that time of the year when thoughts turn to Halloween and the return of the annual Halloween ComicFest happening on Saturday October 26th.
As well as a plethora of Halloween themed titles comic from all corners of the comic book industry, there’s still room for even more; especially if they’re free, right? You can read the full list of titles for yourself here, but here’s my top 5 favourites I’m hoping to bag, in no particular order.
But, be warned, if my local comic book store – Worlds Apart, Birmingham – is anything to go by, you may want to get there early before the queues start forming. The true horror of Halloween would be if you failed to grab the books you really wanted.

The Adventures of Cthulhu Jr. And Dastardly Dick (Source Point Press)
Dastardly Dirk is a wannabe supervillain who is informed he needs to capture the son of Cthulhu to achieve his lifelong dream of being admitted into The League of E.V.I.L. Hilarity and hijinks ensue in this genuinely all-ages comic when the bumbling bad guy discovers Cthulhu Jr. has just moved in next door!

Dark Red #1 (Aftershock Comics)
Charles “Chip” Ipswich isn’t one of those coastal elites with a liberal arts degree and a job at a social media start-up who knows where all the best brunch places are. No, Chip is one of the “forgotten men.” He lives in a rural area in the middle of the country where Jesus still has a place at the dinner table and where factories ship jobs to Calcutta. Chip is also a vampire. Stuck working the last shift at a gas station, Chip is lonely and bored…and then his dull, bleak life is turned upside down when SHE comes to town…

Lady Mechanika: La Dama De La Muerta (Benitez Productions)
After suffering a tragic loss, Lady Mechanika takes a trip to a small Mexican village just in time for their D a de los Muertos celebration. But the festivities turn truly deadly after the arrival of the Jinetes del Infierno, the mythical Hell Riders! This special issue includes the first chapter of the Lady Mechanika: Day of the Dead special, collected in the La Dama de la Muerte TP!

Ghost Rider King of Hell #1 (Marvel)
Johnny Blaze takes the fight to a different devil than he usually faces – Mephisto!  But Mephisto will show Johnny his own brand of suffering – and give Johnny PLENTY of reasons for vengeance.

The Drifting Classroom (Viz Media LLC)
In the aftermath of a massive earthquake, a Japanese elementary school is transported into a hostile world where the students and teachers are besieged by terrifying creatures and beset by madness.
