After the surprise trip to another world, where could Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Diggle (David Ramsey) head to next? How about Earth-1 Hong Kong? Granted, this preview of next week’s Arrow may only give you a split second shot of Katana (Rila Fukushima) to confirm a return to the Season 3 flashback setting. Instead, it is focused on the calamity Oliver, Diggle and Black Siren (Katie Cassidy Rodgers) witnessed at the end of this week’s premiere episode. Will they easily accept the truth about the incident as laid out by the Monitor (LaMonica Garrett)?
And speaking of Earth-2’s destruction, there is something so wonderfully Crisis about it. The destruction of worlds did not begin in the Crisis on Infinite Earth‘s comic book until its first issue, but looked much like this. When we spoke with showrunner Beth Schwartz, she mentioned the end of that world indicates the Crisis is beginning even sooner than the Monitor predicted. Will that speed up Oliver’s mission back on Earth-1? And just what is his mission? What is the Monitor planing? And will it lead to the merger of certain worlds?
This was definitely Arrow‘s strongest season debut in a long while. The cosmic-level storytelling may have helped it as it put Oliver and Dig in a genuinely new and interesting context. Sadly, this means the 2040 flash-forwards — the highlight of last year — look a little dull in comparison. Hopefully, Team Arrow 2.0’s plot will kick into high gear next week.
Arrow airs Tuesdays on The CW.
