Slaine: The Horned God – Time To Rediscover A Classic
by Richard Bruton
Unbelievably, it’s been nearly 30 years since the publication of Pat Mills & Simon Bisley’s groundbreaking Sláine: The Horned God and in 2020, to commemorate that 30th anniversary, we’re going to get a new collector’s edition that really does the comic justice.
The new collector’s edition is timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of its first publication and is published in a bigger than ever format, roughly 11×8 inches, with a lush hardcover version that really does the book justice.
Sláine: The Horned God has to be one of the most popular stories ever published in the pages of 2000 AD, full of a mix of Celtic mythology, extreme violence, and beautiful artwork. Originally published in 2000 AD in three instalments between 1989 and 1990, it proved incredibly successful, a real sword and sorcery saga to remember.
Sláine has been in 2000 AD since Prog 330 (1983), a glorious mish-mash of Celtic and Norse mythology, created by Pat Mills and artist Angela Kincaid.
And over the years, it’s seen some truly amazing artists; Massimo Belardinelli, Mike McMahon, Glenn Fabry, But it was The Horned God and Bisley’s truly game-changing full-colour painted pages that really made everyone stand up and pay attention. In the same way that Bisley drew obvious influence from the likes of Frazetta, his artwork on The Horned God would go on to influence a generation of artists in its turn.
So, come May 2020, we get to relive the entire Horned God experience once more, with Sláine the wandering warrior, alongside his duplicitous dwarf, Ukko, suffering under the dominion of the Drunes; strange druids who have poisoned the land with their magic. Sláine has had enough of their tyranny and, through the Earth Goddess, he learns some shocking truths about the priesthood and his own future. Now Sláine must unite the four kings of Tír na nÓg and use their mystical weapons as he and the Sessair tribe prepare for all-out war!
Sláine: The Horned God – Collector’s Edition by Pat Mills and Simon Bisley is published by 2000 AD on 20 May 2020.
