Josh Blaylock Shares Guide On How To Self-Publish Comics

by James Ferguson

Devil’s Due Comics founder Josh Blaylock is sharing insights from his 20+ years of industry secrets in a new edition of the DIY manual, How to Self-Publish Comics: Not Just Create Them. This 168-page guide is significantly updated for 2019/2020 and digs into everything but the creative aspects of the business. With the rise of Kickstarter and online resources, there are many ways for people to not just create comics, but to get them out there in the world. That can be difficult to navigate.

Blaylock says:

We creative types often shy away from anything administrative or business related, and many of us end up toiling away in obscurity as a result. But what excites me is that although you can’t teach creativity to a business person, you can absolutely teach business to a creative person. And that’s what I set out to do with this book.

Topics covered in How to Self-Publish Comics: Not Just Create Them include building your publishing infrastructure, forming your creative team, sales & marketing, determining, engaging with, and maintaining your key fan base, conventions, crowdfunding, digital publishing, to name a few. It also covers purchase orders, invoices, printer quotes, and other must-know components of the publishing process. These might be the un-sexy parts of making comics, but they are so very necessary, so it’s helpful to have a guide like this.
Blaylock added:

Whether a comic creator has goals that are modest or sky-high, they deserve the chance to succeed in this industry on their own terms. There’s a whole world outside of Marvel and DC, and my hope is that this book can serve as a map to get there.

How to Self-Publish Comics: Not Just Create Them is now available at your local comic shop, book store, and Amazon.
