Learn The Origins Of The Crimson Witch In Conan The Barbarian #10

Conan the Barbarian has an impressive gallery of rogues – from pirates to wizards to gods. However, this newest volume of his adventures has introduced us to the greatest of those enemies, the Crimson Witch and her two children, the foes that finally kill Conan. And at last, Conan the Barbarian #10 reveals their origin.

Jason Aaron, Mahmud Asrar, Matthew Wilson, and Travis Lanham give us this tale that spans all of Conan’s life.

All her life, the Crimson Witch has been searching for blood powerful enough to summon her master, the god Razazel, back to Earth. She found it when she discovered Conan of Cimmeria. However, when Conan slew her, the task of raising Razazel fell on her children Razza and Zazella. Will their mission be the thing that truly ends the life of the mighty Conan?

I’ve pointed out several times in the last year that this series had been very good but fairly formulaic- each single issue story exploring an aspect of what makes Conan ‘CONAN’. Taking this issue to dance between the raindrops and explore Conan’s ultimate enemy is a great move by Aaron. It not only breaks away from the formula, but it also establishes this trio as a truly horrifying threat. I also love how he writes the children, who truly feel like children… just in the service of an evil god.

Asrar and Wilson’s tandem continues to be reason alone to pick up this book. It’s one of the best looking fantasy comics on the stands, month-in, month-out. Asrar infuses Razza and Zazella with so much personality and humanity, from their childlike body language to their fierce evil gaze. Wilson’s color work is subdued, putting the emphasis on the reds so the characters pop off the page and stand out from the earth tones that much of the rest of the issue is colored in.

This story may reveal the true end of Conan’s life, however, it’s far from a shambling corpse. It continues to be one of my favorite reads every month.

Conan the Barbarian #10 is available now from Marvel Comics.
