Coming In 2020 – Monthly Thrill-Power In The Best Of 2000 AD

by Richard Bruton

2000AD and Rebellion announcing its highest-ever profile release to the US & UK direct market with a 12-issue Best of 2000AD series…

Yes, beginning in April 2020, a brand-new 2000AD title, a new 12-issue US-format, full-colour, perfect-bound series, The Best Of 2000AD. It will feature a selection of the very best strips from the past of the UK’s greatest sci-fi comic.
The idea is to put together a modern collection of full-colour strips from the rich history of the comic, but obviously concentrating (due to the full-colour) on more recent years, especially the Rebellion years. Rebellion described it in the press release as…

Best of 2000AD is intended as the ultimate 2000AD mix-tape – an anthology of full-colour stories specially chosen to be accessible to a whole new generation of comic readers who may never have picked up 2000AD in its traditional format.

The first 100-page issue will lead off with a self-contained 48-page Judge Dredd adventure and contain another three strips. No idea what the other strips will be, but there’s a high chance you’ll see more Dredd, some Psi-Judge Anderson, ABC Warriors, Slaine, Strontium Dog, maybe some Rogue Trooper or Zombo, and I’d love to see some of my favourites getting in there as well, with the likes of Grey Area, Brink, Brass Sun, Nikolai Dante featuring. Time will tell, but all we know is that it’s a great idea to really push the comic into new areas.
Over the years, 2000AD has remained popular and acclaimed, but there’s always been some difficulty gaining traction in the US, and this is obviously part of a concerted effort to widen the approach of the comic, its characters, and some brilliant writing and artwork.

There are very few comics that have had – and continue to have – the impact of 2000AD. But we often hear, ‘where do I start reading?’. With Best of 2000 AD that question has a brand new answer.
– 2000AD editor Matt Smith

The 12 issues will feature brand-new covers from an impressive list of comic artists, including issue 1 by Jamie McKelvie (The Wicked and The Divine), Becky Cloonan (Gotham Academy), Charlie Adlard (The Walking Dead), Erica Henderson (The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl), and Annie Wu (Hawkeye), with more to be revealed. And the whole thing will feature the design work of Tom Muller, who was recently responsible for the look of House of X/Powers of X.

It’s called the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic for a reason. If you love your comics dangerous, thrilling and life-affirming but have never read 2000 AD then this is your moment. This new publication is precision-engineered for new and curious readers. We want the Best of 2000 AD to convert a whole new generation into 2000 AD readers for life.
– Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley

The first issue of Best of 2000AD is scheduled for release in late April 2020. It will be available from comic book stores through Diamond Distribution in North America and the UK.
Now, just because we can… it’s a great chance to have a look back at a previous Best of 2000AD Monthly, this one published over 119 issues from 1985 to 1995. We might see some of these in the new series, we might not, but hey, just enjoy some fabulous cover art!
