John Layman’s Chew Meets Outer Darkness In A Cross-Over You Would Never Have Seen Coming

by Olly MacNamee

Teased last week on social media by comic book creators John Layman, and guessed by many to be a second season of Chew, Image Comics have announced today that this new book is in fact a three issue mini-series teaming Chew with Outer Darkness in a crossover no-one saw coming! And I for one am stoked!
As regular readers of this site will know, I have enjoyed each and every issue of Outer Darkness and now the series that brought Layman to my attention in the first place are about to meet up with the crew of the Charon for an adventure that really will be out of this world. And, we have a first look at the debut issue here and now. Judging by the preview below, it doesn’t dilly-dally over getting straight into the action as Tony Chew and John Colby find themselves on the good ship Charon and understandably confused.
On hand to explain more about the germination and evolution of this madcap series is Layman himself:

In the years since finishing the final issue of Chew, the urge to return to the world and its characters has been slowly but steadily growing within me. But I had no interest in returning to some generic ‘Untold Case Files of Tony Chu’ type of story. I wanted to return with a story that goes somewhere new, and says something new about the characters. This crossover will do this. And Outer Darkness, believe it or not, is the ideal vehicle to tell this story. Outer Darkness and Chew are two of my favorite books I’ve ever done, maybe THE favorite books I’ve ever done, and probably the best too. Creatively, combining the two was a dream come true for me. This book is the peanut butter and chocolate of comic book crossovers.

I can’t wait to see what Layman, alongside Outer Darkness co-creator Afu Chan, cooks up in Outer Darkness/Chew when it comes out March 3rd 2020 from Image Comics. Here’s hoping that Chew fans pick up one of the stand out books of the year for me and get onboard ahead of at the second season of Outer Darkness.

Tony Chu is a modern-day cop who gets psychic impressions from what he eats. Joshua Rigg is a 28th-century starship captain who flies through an outer space filled with demons, monsters, and ghosts. Sounds like a perfect recipe for a comic book crossover, don’t it? Join the fun with Outer Darkness/Chew #1.
