Angsty Adam Strange: Your First Look At Strange Adventures #1 By King, Gerads And Shaner

by Olly MacNamee

The Eisner Award-winning from DC’s Mister Miracle and The Sheriff of Babylon, writer Tom King and artist Mitch Gerads, along with artist Evan “Doc” Shaner  re relaunching the Silver Age classic, Strange Adventures in 2020. But, with King and Gerard on the case, no matter how retro it will appropriately feel with DC’s choice inclusion of ‘Doc’ Shaner into the mix, this is still going to be one heck of a bizarre ride from the far side. Even without lettering, these preview pages certainly give you a taste of the vibe the gang are going for.  It certainly has a similar feel to Mister Miracle from the visuals. Angsty superheroes and busy private lives trying to be at one with private life. But, maybe it’s all because Adam ha something weighing on his mind as King alludes to:

Adam Strange is one of a long line of characters—like Tarzan and Flash Gordon, stolid men with dimpled chins who thrive in ‘foreign lands’ – who stand in as a metaphor for a 19th century European dream of colonialism. Of course, colonialism was nothing like this dream, and it’s that contrast that interests me: the bloody gap between the myth and the reality.

A touch of white guilt, maybe? We can all find out more when Strange Adventures #1 comes out March 4, 2020 from DC Comics as a 12 issue maxi-series.
