Explore The Art Of Lost & Found Posters In Still Missing

by James Ferguson

We’ve all seen those posters on telephone poles here and there searching for a lost pet. Starburns Industries Press is making an art book of them in Still Missing, currently on Kickstarter. It collects almost 200 pages of images and illustrations of lost & found posters, ranging from the strange and weird to the funny and beautiful and definitely sad. The animals featured include toucans, tortoises, roosters, ferrets, dragons, and unicorns, to name a few.

Since you’re only seeing the posters without any frame of reference, you can fill in the blanks as to what happened. What was the background here? What is the origin story behind the person looking for a dragon? There’s a lot to unpack in this art book.
Gio Castranova collected the posters in Los Angeles County from 2010 through 2013. Posters were only taken if at least three identical posters were observed within a given one block area. Over 2,000 posters were collected during this time. Since then, Gio has launched an Instagram account which gets submissions from all over the world.

The Kickstarter campaign runs through February 29th, 2020. Rewards include the book itself, posters, tote bags, buttons, beanies, and more.
