Review: Ash Wants Out In ‘Death To The Army Of Darkness #1’

by Josh Davison

Mild Spoilers Ahead
Ash has been having nightmares of being sacrificed in Ancient Egypt to be remade into the Necronomicon Ex Mortis itself. When he wakes up, he’s just a janitor at a grocery store chain. However, a laundry trip finds him staring down a Deadite once again and he decides it’s time to separate himself from the Necronomicon forever. To this end, Ash visits a professor at a local community college and after some convincing, the professor agrees to try and separate Ash from the book with a spell. The results…aren’t quite what Ash expected.

Death to the Army of Darkness #1 brings back Ash Williams in a story that finds the famed Deadite-slayer trying to quit the business forever. He’s had it with his life being threatened and upturned at every turn and he wants the Necronomicon to be someone else’s problem.
The comic features the beloved Ash Williams and his crass and rough-on-the-edges personality. Of course, he insults others, trots out bad one-liners, and he tries to pick up every conventionally attractive woman he runs across. It’s the Ash we know and love.
The story is decent. You are left to wonder why Ash has never tried to separate himself from the Necronomicon Ex Mortis before, though I do suppose he would see himself as the only one who could handle the Deadites–but Ash isn’t always that altruistic.
The final twist is pretty charming, and I look forward to seeing how Ash responds to meeting a lot more people “like” him.

Jacob Edgar brings a charmingly cartoonish art style that suits the personality of Ash and the atmosphere of the overall story. The action scenes are smooth and gory and the color work of Kike J. Diaz gives the book more charm and sheen.
Death to the Army of Darkness #1 is an entertaining new start for Ash Williams and the Deadites. Ash wants out and the Deadites will never let him go–so he’ll need some reinforcements. It’s a good bit of fun and easily earns a recommendation. Check it out.
