‘Hellraiser’ TV Series Comes To HBO With ‘Swamp Thing’ Writer

by Erik Amaya

HBO has such sights to show us.
Variety reports the cable network is developing a television series based on Clive Barker‘s Hellraiser and associated spin-offs. The project will not be a remake of Barker’s 1987 debut film, based on his novella “The Hellbound Heart.” Instead, it will be a new story taking advantage of the expansions on the concept across its various sequels, novels, and Hellraiser comic books.
The series tells the tale of the Lament Configuration, an infernal puzzle box that, once solved, calls upon demonic beings known as Cenobites to deliver the greatest of ecstasies and tortures to those solve the box.
DC Universe Swamp Thing veteran Mark Verheiden and Michael Dougherty are writing the initial script with Halloween reboot director David Gordon Green on board as an executive producer. Other executive producers include Danny McBride, Jody Hill, Brandon James, Lawrence Kuppin, David Salzman, Dan Farah and Eric Gardner. Barker is not involved with the project, but that is not unusual as, outside of a 2013 reboot feature script, he has not been a major creative participant in the Hellraiser films since Hellraiser IV: Bloodline in 1996.
Nonetheless, the mythology is fairly rich and as long as the team can find a strong cast, it may prove to be one of the move shocking program HBO has ever aired.
