‘The Umbrella Academy’ Returns To Netflix On July 31
by Erik Amaya
The cast of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy adaptation danced with delight this morning as they revealed when the program would return: July 3st.
The series, based on the comic book by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, tells the story of seven super-powered children adopted by a billionaire who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares them to save the world. Years later, the six surviving members reunite upon the news of their “father’s” passing and must work together to solve a mystery surrounding his death. But the estranged family begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.
Its first season — a more or less straight adaptation of the comic book’s “Apocalypse Suite” storyline, ended with the the seventh member of the team accessing her powers, drawing the moon toward the Earth, and the entire group slipping into the past to, presumably, confront the demons of their childhood.
Stars Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, and David Castañeda return for the time-warped second season. And based on his appearance in the video, Justin H. Min‘s Ben — the deceased member of the Hargreave family — will have more to do. It is unclear if any of the other cast members, which included Cameron Britton, and Mary J. Blige, will return as, well, most of them were vaporized in the chaos. But perhaps we’ll learn more about them, and any new characters, before the series returns on July 31st.
