Ruby Rose Quits ‘Batwoman’; Kate Kane To Be Recast In Season 2

by Erik Amaya

Not a dream! Not a hoax! Ruby Rose is leaving Batwoman!
According to Deadline, Rose herself revealed her decision to leave in a statement. “This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles,” she said.
Neither the actor nor anyone involved in its production elaborated on her reasons for leaving, but we can make a few guesses. Early in the first season’s production, Rose was seriously hurt and needed emergency spinal surgery to correct the issue. She was subsequently benched from action scenes. Although, as it happens, Deadline cites sources claiming the incident had little to do with her decision to depart. Another guess: the rigors of a weekly series may have proved too exhausting. Though it might sound like a dream job, television is often a 14-hour day, six-day-a-week endeavor; particularly for the person playing the title character. Even without doing a lot of the stunt work, the schedule may have been more of strain than Rose, a veteran of shorter-run prestige dramas and guest-stints, anticipated.
No matter her reasons, The CW, Warner Bros. Television, and Berlanti Productions released a joint statement thanking her for her contributions to the Arrowverse. They also added they are “firmly committed to Batwoman’s second season and long-term future, and we — along with the show’s talented creative team — look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months.”
Batwoman returns to The CW in January.
