The Plot To Save Sousa Revealed In A Preview Of The Next ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’
by Erik Amaya
As this preview for next week’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. reveals, Daniel Sousa (Enver Gjokaj) died attempting to uncover the Hydra infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D. But it seems the Coulson LMD (Clark Gregg) and the rest of the team are willing to alter the timeline to save him and, perhaps, mitigate some of the fallout from S.H.I.E.L.D.’s destruction in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Well, assuming they can actually save Sousa. Will time require his death? Oh, and where’s Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) during all of this? Did she never suspect Hydra agents in her midst?
Fiddling with the timeline continues to be a concern as Deke (Jeff Ward) and Daisy (Chloe Bennet) discussed her attempt to kill Billy Malick. She’s dedicated to changing her reality, as evidence by her confirming Sousa’s worries about enemy agents within S.H.I.E.L.D. There can be no doubt that she will vote yet on saving Sousa. But you have to wonder if Mack (Henry Simmons) or Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) will go along with this; they’re pretty dedicated to preserving the timeline. Then there’s always the possibility that Deke is correct and any changes they make will only splinter off into a new timeline while leaving the one they come from in tact. Time is a funny thing, and maybe Sousa’s survival will prove which theory of time is correct in the context of the show.
Meanwhile, the return of May’s (Ming-Na Wen) emotions during the Area 51 raid is quite telling of what happened to her. The crush of bodies and smoke in the lab recalled the claustrophobic conditions she faced just before her near-death in the Shrike temple. If she’s not Shrike, then the shut down of her emotions as an attempt to deal with the trauma makes sense. As does their return when faced with a similar situation. Then again, there could be two personalities vying for control and the alien one did not know what to do when confronted with echoes of May’s PTSD.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Wednesdays on ABC.
