Nia DaCosta, director of the Jordan Peele produced Candyman reboot shared an astonishing new trailer on Twitter for the upcoming horror film, slated for a September 25th cinematic release.
She accompanied this new trailer – a starling departure from the first trailer – with the statement that this new take on the 90s horror cult classic will be “at the intersection of white violence and black pain, is about unwilling martyrs. The people they were, the symbols we turn them into, the monsters we are told they must have been.”
It’s a great, creepy trailer that makes great use of shadow puppetry in an almost silent trailer that fleshes out the backstory of Candyman we can assume, and suggests a story many African Americans can relate to; exploitation, racism and, in all of it, love, albeit tragic; all done through paper puppets! Amazing and effective.
