‘The New Mutants’ Tempts Fate With Another Teaser

by Erik Amaya

While this latest trailer for 20th Century Studios’ often-delayed The New Mutants claims nothing will stop them, the comedy of errors regarding its release leaves us thinking they’re just tempting fate. Hell, the name of the studio even changed between the time it was original set to debut in 2018 and now.
As before, the teaser offers us glimpses of a group of young mutants — Rahne Sinclair (Maisie Williams), Illyana Rasputin (Anya Taylor-Joy), Sam Guthrie (Charlie Heaton), Danielle Moonstar (Blu Hunt), and Roberto da Costa (Henry Zaga) — housed at a psychiatric ward to deal with their various problems. But is there something more sinister to their treatment?

The film represents the very last gasp of 20th’s X-Men franchise. At the time it was made, the studio planned to use it as an expansion of the series alongside the Deadpool films, an X-Force project, and a Kitty Pryde flick based on her lonely Christmas night in the mansion. But all of these ideas were cast aside when Disney bought 20th and handed the X-Men’s film future to Marvel Studios.
Suddenly, the film was an orphan plagued by various delays in its release. It’s now on its fifth planned date and we seriously doubt that one will happen. Note how the teaser promotes the film’s Comic-Con@Home panel instead of a theatrical release.
Maybe the panel will turn out to offer the biggest surprise yet: the film will be switching to a Hulu release as the chances of any film getting a theatrical run this year seems slim. And, to an extent, The New Mutants has hit the point of no return. It it doesn’t get a big push now, it will look like an even stranger curio in 2021, four years after it was made.
The New Mutants is scheduled for release on August 28th. The Comic-Con@Home panel streams on July 23rd at 2pm.
