Bek Smith To Adapt ‘Reborn’ For Netflix

by Erik Amaya

The Netflix version of Millarworld is getting some new blood.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, writer Bek Smith will adapt Reborn — based on the comic book by Mark Millar and Greg Capullo — for the streaming giant, director Chris McKay, and producer (and possible star) Sandra Bullock.
The comic book tells the tale of Bonnie Black, an eighty-year old who embraces death only to be reborn in Adystria, a fantastical world where she finds her long-dead friends and family in addition to a long war between good and evil. But when her husband turns up missing, Bonnie and her father set off on a quest to discover his whereabouts.
The film represents the next step in adapting Millar’s comics into film and television. Previously announced projects include series based on American Jesus and Jupiter’s Legacy and feature film versions of Empress, Huck, and Sharkey The Bounty Hunter. Netflix bought Millarworld in 2017 with an eye toward developing the writer’s extensive catalogue into various media, but as of now, only Jupiter’s Legacy has gone into production. Though filming was completed before the pandemic shut down film and television production worldwide, Millar recently said the series still requires extensive post-production before its ready to debut on Netflix.
THR suggests the smash success of The Old Guard, based on the comic by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez, made Reborn more of a priority for the streamer — which is a reasonable move. Curiously, it makes no mention of Bullock possibly staring in the film; an idea floated when McKay was first announced as director back in January of 2019.
Smith has comic book adaptation bona fides. She previously wrote an adaption of 100 Bullets and worked on an untitled Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse spinoff. She is also an alum of Marvel’s writing program.
There’s no telling when the film might go into production, but if Bullock ultimately stars in the film, you can bet it will be fast-tracked.
