‘Mr. Butterchips’ Is One Angry Monkey In New Collection

by James Ferguson

Underground comix are alive and well in Mr. Butterchips: A Collection of Cantankerous Commentary, now available from SLG Publishing. The comic, written and illustrated by Alex Schumacher, follows the title character, an ill-tempered monkey with zero patience for right-wing alarmists.

Mr. Butterchips first appeared in Drunk Monkeys magazine in 2016 as an homage to the underground comix of the 60’s and 70’s. After the 2015 presidential election, he took a hard left turn, becoming an ongoing political commentary.
This collection includes the 45 previously published strips from Drunk Monkeys, plus a 22-page stand-alone acid trip of a story called “Psychotropic San Francisco Sojourn.” It also features a brief history of the character’s genesis, a foreword by editor Kevin Ketner, and a gallery of pinups.

Mr. Butterchips: A Collection of Cantankerous Commentary is now available at your local comic shop, bookstore, and Amazon.
