DC FanDome Splits Into Two Events; ‘Hall Of Heroes’ To Steam This Saturday
by Erik Amaya
Realizing that their schedule was quite ambitious, DC FanDome has split itself into two events.
The “Hall of Heroes” this coming Saturday will feature panels about upcoming films, games, a couple of television shows, and a solitary session regarding DC Comics, while September 12th’s “Explore the Multiverse” will cover most of DC’s expansive TV offerings, animation, and some behind-the-scenes video packages.
The original one-day only event planned to offer over 100 hours of content, but as it would be available only during that time, it was impossible for anyone interested in all of the movies and all of the TV shows to watch it all. So, a change was made.
“This is an incredible way to deliver for our fans and offer them twicethe DC FanDome experience,” DC Chief Creative Officer and current DC Comics publisher Jim Lee said in a statement. “Seeing all the feedback in real time on social media, we realized that the only way to do Justice to DC FanDome was to allow it to evolve and expand into two unique events.”
Of course, it could be said the change so late in the planning speaks to the ongoing troubles at DC Comics and WarnerMedia. Massive layoffs were announced last week which gutted the executive and editorial ranks of the publisher and had far-reaching effects across the AT&T media empire. At the time, it was unclear how it would impact DC’s counter-offering to Comic-Con@Home. But with an unexpected amount of older video packages on the schedule for the event’s “InsiderVerse” section and the split into two events, it is possible significant portions of content had to be rethought on the fly. Additionally, expecting fans to watch all of that content without an on-demand option was a pretty big ask.
Also, it should be noted, besides a handful of portfolio reviews and some archival behind-the-scenes featurettes, panels focused on DC Comics were few. The one key panel, the so-called “Surprise DC Comics Panel,” is still set to stream this Saturday.
The DC FanDome Hall of Heroes beings this Saturday at 10AM Pacific on DCFanDome.com.
