Dan Slott And Mark Millar Remember Forbidden Planet Ahead Of Forbidden Planet 42
by Olly MacNamee
Now that DC FanDome is out of the way – well, until the second part in a couple of weeks – Forbidden Planet want to remind comic nook fans of their own online event coming this Saturday August 29th with a lot more focus on comics and comic book creators than the DC FanDome event, which was more a push on its films and TV output, with barely a single creator’s name coming up, expect for the ubiquitous presence of Jim Lee. Oh, and a lot of the use of the word “synergy” too.
Well, Forbidden Planet started off as a comic book specialist store and that what it still remains to this day, marking their 42nd birthday with this special online event, including the likes of Dan Slott, Mark Millar, William Shatner, Darryl McDaniels (DMC of Run DMC fame), Kevin Smith and far, far more.
As a reminder of the important Forbidden Planet had, the organisers have released two new short promos featuring the aforementioned Mark Millar and Dan Slott reminiscing on what Forbidden Planet meant to them, and where they first came across this marvellous store.
For what it’s worth, I have a my own memories of my first journey to Forbidden Planet as a kid. I remember having a three hour stop-over in London while waiting for a train to the coast and insisted myself and my mum went trekking across London to discover Forbidden Planet when it was still on Denmark Street. I bought a handful of Judge Dredd comics, which were being reprinted under the Eagle Comics banner back then – with those stunning new Brian Bolland covers you may remember – and they were my prize possession of the whole holiday I then embarked upon. It was also my first experience of any specialist comic book store whatsoever, and I marvelled at the original Dave Gibbons’ Doctor Who original art pages on the walls. What a great first-time in a comic book store! Fond memories…
But, Back to the main story. You can catch the full Forbidden Planet 42 event this Saturday 29th August online here.
