Netflix Picks Up ‘Resident Evil’ Series

Netflix is about to see S.T.A.R.S.
The streaming giant confirmed Thursday its plans to adapt the Capcom horror video game series Resident Evil into a television show. The 8-part first season will be executive produced by Supernatural veteran Andrew Dabb.
“Resident Evil is my favorite game of all time. I’m incredibly excited to tell a new chapter in this amazing story and bring the first ever Resident Evil series to Netflix members around the world,” Dabb said in a statement. “For every type of Resident Evil fan, including those joining us for the first time, the series will be complete with a lot of old friends, and some things (bloodthirsty, insane things) people have never seen before.”
The program will feature a protagonist with a very familiar last name: Wesker. Split into two timelines — before and after the T-Virus rages across Raccoon City — the series will tell the tale of Jade Wesker and her sister Billie. In the before time, the siblings are fourteen-years-old and newly arrived in the city. But, according to the series description, “the more time they spend there, the more they come to realize that the town is more than it seems and their father may be concealing dark secrets.” In the future time, a thirty-year-old Jade “struggles to survive in this New World, while the secrets from her past – about her sister, her father, and herself – continue to haunt her.”
One wonders if Jade will keep up the family tradition of cool sunglasses.
Resident Evil began its life in Japan as the horror game series Biohazard and flourished across the world with eight installments of the mainline series, numerous side story games, various animated adaptations, and a live action film series starring Milla Jovovich.
The series marks Netflix’s continued forays into adapting video games. Their first, The Witcher, was a huge success and secured a future even as the streamer went on a cancellation tour. It is unclear when Resident Evil will debut, but let’s assume it will be a 2022 release.
