As part of its new business model, Soaring Penguin Press has launched a Kickstarter campaign for The Glass Wall from Yulia Lapko and William Robertson. After learning the results of a recent UK Comics Creator Survey that showed only 13% of creators earned their sole income from comics, the publisher set out to address this imbalance. This is the first step towards that goal.
“We’ve worked up a number of fantastic rewards, including original art by the artist Yulia, T-shirts, signed prints, and an original soundtrack album for the book recorded by the writer, William,” said co-publisher John Anderson. “And we have some really exciting and original stretch goals we’ll be announcing as the campaign proceeds.”
The Glass Wall centers on Lucian stuck in a tough spot in a self-obsessed East End London where everyone is snorting, shooting, or smoking. He’s been told that the only defense is to wear an armor of indifference. He’ll be forced to pick a side when his best friend is accused of raping his ex-fiancee.
“The Glass Wall is a powerful and electric debut,” added co-publisher Tim Pilcher, “and this Kickstarter campaign’s success will not only provide substantial up-front payment for creators William Robertson and Yulia Lapko, but will help set the precedent that will allow Soaring Penguin Press to showcase new creators while paying them a fair wage. The more supporters there are, the more the creators make directly.”
The Kickstarter campaign runs through October 27th, 2020.
