Warner Bros. Nabs Film Adaptation Of Kwanza Osajyefo And Tim Smith’s ‘Black’

The film adaptation of Kwanza Osajyefo and Tim Smith‘s Black inches closer to production.
Deadline reports Warner Bros. Pictures has acquired the film package from Studio 8. The Black Mask Studios comic book and its follow-up, Black [AF]: American’s Sweetheart, tell the tale of a United States in which superpowers begin to manifest exclusively in the bodies of black people. The first series follows Kareem Jenkins, who learns to live with his newfound powers, while the second follows Eli Franklin, a young woman who tries to become the nation’s first legit superhero. Black has become a comic book franchise in its own right since Studio 8 first optioned the original comic in 2018.
The feature script, by Titans producer Bryan Edward Hill, focuses on “one young man who survives a violent event and realizes that he is part of these extraordinary people, but a secret consortium wants to control these abilities and those who possess them, and he soon finds himself at the center of a war over the future of mankind itself.”
Studio 8’s Jeff Robinov, Guy Danella, and John Graham are still onboard to produce, as are Black Mask’s Matteo Pizzolo and Brett Gurewitz. Osajyefo and Smith will be co-producers.
The search is on to find a director, so it still may be sometime before the feature is ready for release. Nonetheless, it is good to hear the project is still in active development as so many film options on indie titles tend to vanish into the wind.
