As New Year’s Eve celebrations will be understandably muted this year, Netflix offers you an intriguing option — spend the day with Chilling Adventure of Sabrina. The service announced early Monday that the series’ final segment of episodes will debut on December 31st. They even put together a teaser.
In the final eight episodes, The Eldritch Terrors descend upon Greendale. And, as Netflix puts it, “the coven must fight each terrifying threat one-by-one (The Weird, The Returned, The Darkness to name a few), all leading up to…The Void, which is the End of All Things.” Meanwhile, Nick (Gavin Leatherwood) slowly earns his way back into Sabrina’s (Kiernan Shipka) heart, but will he completely redeem himself before the Void makes its bid to destroy everything?
While Sabrina appears to be another victim of Netflix’s habit of arbitrary cancellations — we’re still not over the “un-renewal” of I Am Not Okay With This — it is also plausible that the series was always planned as a four-part thing. Indeed, it is tough to imagine this show going on like a CW program. But again, transparency on Netflix’s part about how long they intend to invest in a show would be helpful for the creatives involved and the potential fanbase. There’s nothing wrong with a limited series as long as you tell people it is limited upfront. It worked for Voltron: Legendary Defender and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power; it could also work for live action genre series.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina returns one last time on December 31st.
