The Art Of Politics: The US Election Special
by Richard Bruton
As you might have noticed, there was an election over in the US this week. Couple of older fellas up for the job of President, names of Trump and Biden. So, because we couldn’t wait for the end of the month to cover this one, pull up a chair and settle in as we give you a lil’ look see at the political cartoonists’ responses to the election.
It was, for many out there expecting a Biden win, far tighter than at first thought, with Trump performing well with the on-person, on-the-day voting. State by state reported numbers and we watched state after state go the way it had last time. There was no surprise flipping of Florida, as we’d been told may well happen, certainly no flipping of Texas.
It was, as they say, neck and neck..
By the early hours of election day part two, it was still very close, Biden’s threat seemingly neutralised, Trump in the ascendant… which of course meant that we had to have him come out and claim victory already, even though we knew that there was meant to be more to the election than this. We had mail-in ballots to count yet…
Martin Rowson on Trump claiming victory on election night –
Dave Brown on the fat lady…
And then it started… the tide began turning, the mail-in ballots began having an impact and we watched the Biden vote in key states begin to claw back the Trump lead.
Cue curious orange having the first of many meltdowns… voter fraud, the threat of lawsuits, stop the count where he was losing ground, keep counting where he was picking up the votes still… yep, just exactly as we all expected…
Steve Bell on Trump’s claims of voter fraud…
Martin Rowson on Joe Biden’s route to the Presidency…
David Rowe with two on Biden and the US mail…
And we finally got the result on Saturday November 7th, the end of a very long week where far too many of us had been watching 24hr news channels every waking hour.
President-elect Biden was announced. And where was the orange one when it happened? He was on the golf course. There’s a certain correctness to that, isn’t there?
So, as usually happens, the President conceded, there was a concillatory speech, the new team got ready for the transition… Oh no, hold on, what was I thinking. This is Trump, he’s going to hang on and hang on until the Secret Service have to go in and evict him…

And passing the torch…
And finally, in a cartoon that seems to really capture the sense of relief that millions of Americans feel, here’s David Rowe quite magnificently supplying the follow-up to the cartoon he created in 2016. This one, announcing the start of this long four years…
Followed now by this one, as America looks to reclaim some of what it has lost, bring a divided nature together, heal some of what has been inflicted in these last four years…
There will be so much more going on, no doubt, as Trump has until January and the inauguration to create the sort of havoc only he can possibly achieve.
But that, dear reader, we shall cover a little more in the Art of Politics – November Edition – coming to you at the end of the month.
Now, goodnight one and all. Hopefully, now we’ll get the chance to see America made great again.
