It seems Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) will be planting a flag in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after all.
Variety reports the writing team of Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin and Wendy Molyneux will write Deadpool 3, the third film in the sarcastic, fourth-wall breaking action series. Reynolds will presumably be back as the Merc with a Mouth, and we’re going to presume he will be aware of the changes to the universe he once knew.
No plot details are available — naturally — but the site reports the film will be the first in a trilogy overseen by Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige. We’ll go out on a limb and suggest this will be the series to introduce the X-Men into the MCU. It is only logical, after all.
That said, we do hope the Feige and the writers use Reynolds’ old joke about skipping Deadpool 3 and making Deadpool 4 instead. In his outline, the film would make references to the movie they never shot. In the context of the Disney/Fox merger, the joke gets better as Feige becomes the in-movie reason audiences never saw the real Deadpool 3.
Then again, that joke might be too meta for Marvel Studios and its plans for Deadpool and the Merry Marvel Mutants. Time will tell, of course, it always does.
Though unscheduled, the film could potentially replace Black Panther 2 on the roster or take one of the late Phase 5 release dates Disney is hold for Marvel.
