Greg Hildebrandt Creates ‘Star Wars’ Homage For ‘Red Sonja’ #1 Variant Cover Campaign

by Erik Amaya

Working alongside his brother Tim, artist Greg Hildebrandt‘s Star Wars poster is one of the most iconic images ever produced for the space saga. Made in just 36 hours for the UK run of the original Star Wars film, it quickly became one of the series’ great ambassadors. It also adorned the walls of many, many fans thanks to its bold style and ability to capture the magic of the original film in one striking image. Also, it no doubt inspired plenty of paintings on the sides of vans in the 1970s. Well, at least in Southern California, anyway.

And for the new Red Sonja variant cover Kickstarter from Dynamite, Hildebrandt is revisiting the imagery for an interesting self-homage which also happens to underscore the title character herself.

“I was honored to work with [Nick Barrucci] and the Dynamite team on this Kickstarter campaign,” Hildebrandt said in a statement. “When they told me it was Red Sonja and explained what they wanted, I really got into the project. It’s fun for me to paint a badass woman with a sword. Then seeing the final product and what they are doing with the various covers made it a complete package for the fans. My fans and Red Sonja’s fans! Hope you enjoy the art.”

Inside, the issue will reprint the 1977 Red Sonja #1 story, “The Blood of the Unicorn,” by Roy Thomas, Clair Noto and Ed Summer and artist Frank Thorne. Additionally, backers can opt for a special retro cover (available for the first 48 hours of the campaign), a standard edition with modern trade dress, a “virgin” cover without any logos, or a black and white line art edition. Signed and CGC graded copies are also available. A handful of bonus options unlock should backers decide to get all four covers. Further options include a lithograph of the new cover or a copy of The Tolkien Years of the Brothers Hildebrandt by Greg Hildebrandt Jr. Head over to the Kickstarter page for more information.
