Nicolas Cage Will Teach You A ‘History Of Swear Words’

by Erik Amaya

There are handful of documentary subjects tailor made for Nicolas Cage to narrate or serve as host. Swearing might not be at the top of that list, it feels more like a Samuel L. Jackson thing, but the legendary Wicker Man actor will front Netflix’s upcoming documentary series, History of Swear Words.

The tongue-in-cheek, six-part series will investigate some of the most incendiary words in the American English lexicon; terms we can’t post without putting an asterisk in the place of the vowels. The program is the brainchild of Funny or Die, B17 Entertainment, Bellamie Blackstone, Mike Farah, Joe Farrell, Beth Belew, Brien Meagher, and Rhett Bachner. Guest stars will include Joel Kim Booster, DeRay Davis, Open Mike Eagle, Nikki Glaser, Patti Harrison, London Hughes, Jim Jefferies, Zainab Johnson, Nick Offerman, Sarah Silverman, Baron Vaughn, Isiah Whitlock Jr, and a score of linguists, cognitive scientists, and lexicographers to explain how these words came to have their dubious distinctions.

It all sounds fun, of course, and it’s perfectly in keeping with the image Cage has cultivated over the past few years. We fully expect he will bring his A-game — or “Nouveau Shamanic,” as he used to call it — to being a PBS style host or narrator. In fact, this clip from the series indicates this will be the case:

History of Swear Words joins the Netflix catalogue on January 5th.
