Review: The Final Face-Off Between Malik And Richter In ‘We Only Find Them When They’re Dead’ #5

by Brendan M. Allen

‘Destiny has come for the endeavors of the Vihaan II. Malik and Richter face off for the last time and only one will survive. Their uncertain futures will be forever changed by a shattering discovery.’

In the last chapter of We Only Find Them When They’re Dead, we finally learned what Richter was holding against Malik. The opening sequence of chapter four sheds more light on the situation. Richter was engaged to Malik’s brother, Thierri. Malik did some things to try to exploit the relationship, and Thierri ended up eating it. It wasn’t exactly Malik’s fault, but it was totally Malik’s fault.

Now, Richter’s finally got Malik in a compromising situation, and she won’t let up until one or both of them are dead.

Al Ewing has been steadily dialing up the tension, and this is the chapter where everything finally breaks wide open. Malik really isn’t a good dude, and the weight of the secret he’s been carrying explains a lot about the decisions he’s made up until this point, and his driving obsession with finding a living god. There’s no way he thought that would end well, and that had to have been part of the plan.

The art by Simone Di Meo is amazing. This is another chapter where he gets to show off big, wide open shots of space with its massive floating gods, but also has to get in tight on the crew’s faces as they watch the scene unfold between Richter and Malik. Subtle emotional shifts are telegraphed in expression and posture, while the absurd vastness of space and the impossible size and beauty of the gods is beautifully conveyed.

We Only Find Them When They’re Dead continues tightening the screws. Just when you think there’s some resolution in this issue, there’s a huge cowboy cliffhanger that sets up a whole new level of intense drama moving forward. You couldn’t put this thing down if you wanted to. It’s excruciatingly addictive.
