Super Sunday (Part 1): More DC Future State Previews Starting With ‘Future State: Swamp Thing’ #2
by Olly MacNamee
DC Future State has been a hit with both reviewers and fans alike. This week sees the half-way point for this publishing behemoth and second issues dropping for titles like Future State: Swamp Thing and Future State: The Flash, along with others titles too.
With some issues offering an oversized anthology style experience – such as The Next Batman #3 – while others are single story titles that most comic book fans are used to, it would seem that DC Comics are not just using this line to test the popularity for these new superheroes, but possibly using it to also gauge the readers’ reaction to bigger, anthology style floppies. Might this be one way forward for DC Comics under their new paymasters AT&T? DC Black Label for more mature, alternative takes on their characters, DC Comics for the hardcore fans with anthologies offering more bang for the buck, and then there’s there’s their young readers and middle grade graphic novels division too. Oh, and their DC Digital First titles as well. It certainly seems like some kind of plan coming together, doesn’t it?
I am reminded of the opening line of Charles’ Dickens’s A Tale of Two Cities: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” which I believe is rather an apt quotation to sum up all the going ons at DC Comics over the past year. Mass lay-offs but alos new and diverse voices emerging too.
If nothing else, it’s certainly interesting times at DC Comics.
Still, enough speculating for today, what about those previews? Well, setting you up for a leisurely afternoon of DC Future State previews, check out Future State: Swamp Thing #2. A favourite of mine, as you might be able to tell from my review of the first issue here.

“Humanity strikes back! The shadow of Swamp Thing Supreme stretches across the globe as it has for centuries. The world is at peace, until a rebellious faction of humanity ignites their terrible plan, fueled by Woodrue Wilson’s appetite for power. But Swamp Thing, too, harbors a secret-one he must reveal in order to restore peace to the planet once again. But it will cost him everything he has.”
Future State: Swamp Thing #2 is out Tuesday 2nd February from DC Comics
