‘Over the Garden Wall’ Creator To Adapt ‘Redwall’ For Netflix

by Tito W. James

According to Animation Magazine, Brian Jacques’ Redwall novel series will be adapted by Over the Garden Wall creator Patrick McHale for Netflix. The fantasy series centers on anthropomorphic mice who fight for honor, justice, and survival in a medieval world. Netflix’s plan is to release Redwall as a feature film then as a spin-off series based on the character of Martin the Warrior.

Having read Redwall and Martin the Warrior growing up, I can guarantee McHale is perfect for the series. With Over the Garden Wall, he has proven he can create an original rustic fantasy world with darker themes bleeding in. The Redwall series gets pretty dark with predatory animals taking the place of fantasy monsters. The books also explore themes of war, slavery, and political intrigue; the interactions and power plays between the villains are just as interesting as the heroic exploits.

I wish the best of luck to the entire creative team. This is a dream come true and a great indicator of how we’re entering a new golden age of animation.
